SICKLE CELL DISEASE
Sickle Cell disease is due to the inheritance of abnormal from of haemoglobin (Hbs and Hbc). It is an inherited disease. About 20% of Africans are carriers of Hbs gene and about 6% Hbc gene.

The proportion of children born with the disease is estimated to be 2-3%. In this disease, the structure abnormality of the hemoglobin causes functional defects. All the signs and symptoms are due to the formation of abnormal shape of red blood cells which haemolyse easily and block small blood vessels causing infarctions.
